Concussion injuries are receiving considerable attention in the media causing concern for athletes, parents, and sport program administrators.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1.6 – 3.8 million sports and recreation-related concussions occur in the United States each year.  Concussions account for up to 5% of all sports injuries.  This webinar will use recent literature to provide participants the most current understanding of concussion injury.  The causes and risk factors of concussion injuries will be explored.  An overview of the best practices will be presented including sideline identification, diagnosis, treatment, practice restrictions, and safe return to participation.  The webinar will utilize results from published and ongoing research examining mild traumatic brain injury outcomes for patients.

John Dean, MPT, SCS, ATC, is beginning his eighth year as the Director of Rehabilitation with the University of Tennessee Sports Medicine staff. Dean is a board-certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy and provides rehabilitation services for UT student athletes. He has more than a decade of experience working in college football.  Dean helped to develop and implement comprehensive concussion management plans at three Division I programs including Southern California, Florida, and Tennessee.  Last year Dean was selected by the United States Ski and Snowboard Association to assist in providing sports medicine coverage for the U.S. men’s alpine ski team.
Prior to coming to Tennessee, Dean worked as an athletic trainer with the Gators’ football team at the University of Florida. At UF he was also an instructor in the Applied Physiology and Kinesiology Department, teaching a course in rehabilitation. He previously was a staff athletic trainer at Southern California, working with the football and baseball programs, including the Trojans’ 2003 and 2004 national champion football teams.
Dean graduated Magna Cum Laude from San Diego State University with a degree in kinesiology in 2000. He completed his Master’s degree in physical therapy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dean is an experienced clinician and educator who is active in the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the American Physical Therapy Association and has been an invited speaker at numerous regional and national conferences.  He has served on the professional education committee of the Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society for the past three years.
